Sony will be releasing its Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact starting Feb. 7 in the US. Both handsets will reportedly be unlocked when they go on sale in the U.S. next month. The smartphones will be priced at $600 and $500 respectively. According to Computer World, they can be bought from online retailers including Best Buy and Amazon.
The outlet adds Sony already has a listing for an international version of the Xperia Z5 Premium on Amazon; however, it comes with no warranties. The upcoming Z5 and Compact releases will reportedly not have fingerprint sensor technology. There no word from Sony if they will be releasing the Premium in the United States.
As for the specs, the Xperia Z5 will be 5.2 inches long and houses a Snapdragon 810 processor with 3 GB RAM and 32 GB of internal storage that can be expanded with a microSD. The phone will have a 1080p display and comes with 23-megapixel back cam, 5 MP front cam and 2900mAh battery. The Xperia Z5 comes in four colors including black, white, green or gold.
The Xperia Z5 Compact is notably smaller. It will be 4.7 inches long and have a smaller 720p display. It will come with a Snapdragon 810 SoC chipset and 32 GB of expandable storage but will only have 2 GB RAM and a 2700 mAh battery. The Z5 Compact is available in yellow, coral, black and white, according to Ars Technica.
According to CNET, both handsets are water-resistant up to 3 feet of water and have metal and glass bodies. They come unlocked which means that it can get service from any provider such as AT&T or T-Mobile.
An expert shared to Computer World that even though Sony provides competent products, the brand is better known for its electronic gadgets and gaming consoles.
"Sony has always had good designs and top quality cameras and video capabilities in smartphones, but so far hasn't been able to get that into the heads of retailers, carriers and consumers," they said.
Another analyst weighs in and states that the company does not have enough noticeable campaigns for their smartphones to flourish in the market. Consumers are also unaware that most of the cameras used on competitor phones come from Sony.
"The build quality of the [latest] devices is top notch and all three Z5 models feel very high-end and solid in the hand," another expert said and adds that his Z5 Premium is ""very high end and capable of competing with the iPhone 6S and Samsung Galaxy Note 5."
