Developer John Romero Creates New 'Doom' Game Map, Level [Where to Download, Specs & Features]
- comments
For those who played and followed “Doom,” the classic first-person shooting game that was released more than two decades ago, here's great news for you: John Romero, known as one of the game's key developers, has released a new map after 21 years!
Romero's homecoming, according to Engadget, brings “Doom” players a map called “Tech Gone Bad,” a reimagining of the “Phobos Anomaly” map at the end of the Episode 1 of "Doom." Fans are in for a treat as Romero combines his knowledge of the game and an additional 21 years of experience to boot.
Romero has posted the link to the map download in his Twitter. You can also get it here.
It's been 21 years since I made a DOOM level. Here's my version of E1M8 using DOOM1.WAD. https://t.co/ueKM7gBbXd pic.twitter.com/NlmA9aIALN

Excited? Of course, you won't be able to play the new map by just downloading the map itself.
First, get the file for the game map that Romero posted in his Twitter account. The download will be quite quick as it is but a small size.
The download will give you two files: a text document that gives details about the map's vitals. The other one is the map itself.
Next, you'll need to have a copy of “Doom” itself. Mashable has tested the map on “Ultimate Doom,” which is available from Steam for a mere $4.99. Don't worry about system requirements as the game is an old one which will probably run on anything that Steam can run on.
Then, you'll also need a source port called “ZDOOM” to run the map. Click here to download it and, once downloaded, put it in the “base” directory found in the “Ultimate Doom” folder in your system.
Afterwards, transfer Romero's map file, the on titled “e1m8b.wad” to the “base” directory as well. Then click and drag the map file to hover over the “ZDOOM” application executable. This should launch “ZDOOM,” a modded version of the original “Doom.”
Selecting “New Game” then the “Knee Deep in the Dead” episode will give you access to the new map, albeit after beating the first seven levels of “Doom.” Alternatively, you can cheat your way to play the level right away by typing “idclev8” once you get control of your character.
Typing “idfa” will give you a bunch of weapons to use, while typing “iddqd” will activate “god mode” and make you invulnerable. These cheats take the challenge out of the game though. You've been warned.
