It seems that the beloved T-101 will not be back for a while. Reports reveal that Paramount has taken the sequel to "Terminator Genisys" off its schedule.

According to Cinemablend, the film was originally scheduled for a May 19, 2017 release date and was to be the second of another "Terminator" trilogy.

It appears that the "Baywatch" movie, which stars Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Zac Efron, has been pushed up to its place on the schedule. Executives at Paramount have been adamant about the "Baywatch" film ever since it was announced, so this move isn't surprising.

The news does not bode well for the "Terminator" series as The Hollywood Reporter states that the rights to the film franchise will revert to James Cameron by 2019.

It has been confirmed that Cameron is still working on several "Avatar" sequels as well as other projects, and is not showing any interest in making any "Terminator" movie soon.

So, what happened to the series when there were so many plans of its revival?

According to IGN, the poor domestic box office numbers proved to be the ultimate downfall for the franchise.

Paramount pushed the movie heavily in the months before the 2015 summer season. However, "Terminator Genisys" only managed to gross US$89 million domestically and US$440 million worldwide.

The film opened to mixed reviews from both critics and fans alike. Many fans of the series claimed that the plot twist was already revealed during the film's trailers.

It was reported that with a heavy marketing budget, the film would have needed to gross at least US$450 million worldwide just to break even.

Initially, Paramount and their partner on the film, Skydance, planned for the sequels for "Terminator Genisys" to show in 2017 and 2018. According to Skydance Media Chief Creative Officer Dana Goldberg, some "re-adjusting" need to be done first.

Goldberg states that the studio is ultimately happy with the numbers the film made, but there is room for improvement. The CCO says that fans of the series should not be worried as the studio still has plans to move forward with the project.

The executive further claims that the move of the sequel's release date is done to listen to the feedback from the fans. The CCO describes it as a strategic move as it would be unwise not to listen to what the fans have to say.
