Makeup lovers should know that an ingredient found in some makeup brands pose a health threat, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned on Friday, HealthDay reports. According to the organization, a product called Alikay Naturals Bentonite Me Baby, which is sold at Target, Amazon, and Sally Beauty Supply.

The listing on Sally Beaty reads that "Alikay Naturals Bentonite Me Baby features Bentonite Clay, a natural clarifier, used to purify your skin, hair, and entire body. Use as a face mask for a clearer complexion and soft skin or as a hair mask for defined curls and clean hair. This natural clarifier features no Petroleum, Alcohol or Mineral Oil, Paraben, and Sulfates or Silicones."

The product is reportedly a clay that purifies the skin and hair, but the DFA warns that they found high levels of lead in the clay and that consumers should refrain from using the product.

According to WebMD, the FDA was alerted of the high levels of lead content in the clay from the Minnesota Department of Health. No confirmed cases of lead poisoning has been linked to the use of cosmetic clay so far. However, the FDA encourages those who have used the product or given it to a child to consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Here are some safer alternatives to common beauty products that are used by millions of women worldwide every day.

1. Coconut oil. While some moisturizers may contain chemicals and other products that are synthetic, coconut oil is a great alternative that is effective in keeping skin hydrated and moisturized. Whether for the skin or hair, coconut oil works well because it is composed of medium-chain fatty acids that penetrate deep into the hair and skin, and ensures conditioning from within, as per The Health Site. It's also a great source of antioxidants like vitamin E, which can help rejuvenate and nourish the skin and maintain its healthy, youthful glow.

2. Zinc oxide. Sunscreen is an important part of one's beauty regimen, as it's a daily habit that protects skin from the harmful sun rays that may accelerate skin aging. Mark's Daily Apple recommends using those with zinc oxide, which sits right on top of the skin and prevents UV damage.

3. Pomegranate seeds. Want to bring back that natural, supple pair of lips? Try using pomegranate seed scrub. Just crush the pomegranate seeds and mix with milk cream. Apply this mixture to the lips every day to bring back its natural redness. The Health Site also recommends combining crushed pomegranate seeds with sugar and olive oil and sing this paste as a lip scrub.
