Square Enix went on a stealth mode before launching a startling move by releasing "Final Fantasy IX" today, Feb. 9 on mobile platforms. The video game developer and publisher from Japan is the maker of some of the most beloved RPG series in gaming history like "Kingdom Hearts" and "Final Fantasy."
Just before the turn of the year, Square Enix announced that the latest and one of the most well-received installments of the "Final Fantasy" series will be coming to PC and smartphones, but details on the exact release date were withheld. Fans were caught off guard when the title was made available for download today via Apple's iTunes and Google Play.
"Final Fantasy IX" is now on sale for a regular price of $20.99, but the company is giving away 20 percent discount as part of its launch sale. The deal will bring down the price to $16.99 and will last from Feb. 10 until Feb. 21 only.
"It's also coming to PC, but a release date more specific than the "early 2016" window displayed on its Steam page has not been announced," says GameSpot.
The video game was first launched back in 2000 for the original PlayStation and it was re-released for PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita and PSP through the PlayStation Network in 2010. Since its original release, the title has sold more than 5 million copies.
According to the description for the game, the app is huge and could take up about 4GB of storage with a requirement of over 8GB of free space to download. Download time may also take long.
"Zidane and the Tantalus Theater Troupe have kidnapped Princess Garnet, the heir of Alexandria.
To their surprise, however, the princess herself yearned to escape the castle. Through a series of unusual circumstances, she and her personal guard, Steiner, fall in with Zidane and set out on an incredible journey," wrote Square Enix for the game story.
Apart from the better graphics that gamers can expect from this mobile version, some of the exciting features of the game include learning new abilities by equipping items, Trance mode capable of powerful new skills, and Synthesis where gamers can combine a couple of items or pieces of equipment together in order to create a level-up version of these items. Gamers can also enjoy a lot of Minigames during the journey where they can earn rewards.
