Late last month, fans were disappointed to find out that Steven Moffat was stepping down as executive producer and lead writer of "Doctor Who," The Guardian reports. "Broadchurch" creator Chris Chibnall is set to replace Moffat.
"Feels odd to be talking about leaving when I’m just starting work on the scripts for season 10, but the fact is my timey-wimey is running out," Moffat said. "While Chris is doing his last run of Broadchurch, I’ll be finishing up on the best job in the universe and keeping the Tardis warm for him. It took a lot of gin and tonic to talk him into this, but I am beyond delighted that one of the true stars of British television drama will be taking the Time Lord even further into the future."
The 10th season is slated to begin filming this May, as per Radio Times. BBC has also decided on a later deadline for the wrap up of filming, as the are still in the process of looking for the "right person" to replace Jenna Coleman, who plays the Doctor's companion, Clara Oswald and also announced her departure in September.
Coleman admitted that her contract was only up until the end of series nine, which made her think about what she wanted to do next. Nonetheless, she shares that it's been one of the greatest experiences in her career.
"It’s become more my home than my home actually is," Coleman told Entertainment Weekly in September. " I recognize that it’s a special part of my life. The storytelling is so dynamic, and big, and whimsical, and magical. You feel like you’re in a fairy tale and it’s really hard to walk away from that. It’s a lot more than just a job—the friendships I have with the crew and Peter, it’s very hard to say goodbye to it."
Meanwhile, Den of Geek reports that Moffat revealed how many episodes series 10 of "Doctor Who" and series four of "Sherlock" will have. He confirmed that he has 14 "Doctor Who" episodes, most likely referring t the 13 episodes and one Christmas special, and three "Sherlock" films. After receiving his OBE, he also shared that aside from the "Doctor Who" and "Sherlock" episodes, he hasn't been contemplating on other projects yet. It seems that it would be a wild guess on where fans will see Moffat's creatives when he bows out after series 10, but some are already speculating that he will be moving to filmmaking in the near future. For now, though, fans will have to wait for the 10th series of "Doctor Who," as it returns to BBC on a yet-unspecified date.
