Halloween brings excitement to the hearts of kids and adults. The excited youth and kids take their time to brush off the boredom of the year and join in heartwarming celebrations.
But safety of the kids and youngsters who're enjoying the moments is crucial. American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has proffered some tips on staying safe on a Halloween night.
Personal Safety
Choose bright and reflective costumes. Do not pick flowing or extra-large shoes to avoid tripping and falling. Reflective striping, tape or trick-or-treat bags is a good addition for better visibility.
When you buy the costumes, get the ones that are clearly labeled for being safe from flames. Masks must be non-covering the eyes. Best alternative to bulky masks is non-toxic makeup that can be easily removed later.
Make sure that your child carries an instrument like cane, stick or chain that is small enough for him to handle easily. Extra-long things can hurt him if he trips. Decorative contact lenses can be very dangerous if you do not take the advice of an eye specialist before fixing them.
They can cause inflammation, serious eye disorder and may lead to permanent vision loss. Does your child know how to call 911? It is always good to train him on how to call local police or 911 in case any emergency happens or he gets lost.
Kids Safety in the Open
Leaving children especially small kids alone on their neighborhood rounds is definitely not a good idea. Any parent or adult must accompany them to keep an eye on their procession.
In case older children are going alone, there must be an agreed upon plan of their route and time of return. Children must only enter homes that have a porch light and should not accept an invitation for a treat in someone's home or car.
Pedestrian injuries commonly happen on Halloween night. To make sure that all is safe and fine, stay in groups and communicate with others about your plans of going anywhere. A fully charged cellphone must always be with you for making an emergency call.
Using sidewalks is strongly recommended, and also choose those streets that are well-lit. Never cross a road where the crosswalk is not recognized. Motorists may not be able to see trick-or-treaters. If you notice any illegal activity or suspicious movement, leave the area immediately and inform the police instantly.
Health Safety
Health is important on Halloween night. Let the children have a good fulfilling meal before going for trick-or-treating or parties. This will discourage them from having excessive amount of Halloween treats.
Encourage non-food treating items like coloring books, pencils and paints. When children are back home with treats, check all the assortment and separate those that are not standard or look spoiled.
