Five-month-old Daniel who suffered from a rare liver disease by birth needed a liver transplant to save his life. For the surprise of the surgeons in Lurie Children's Hospital in Chicago, the child found a donor in a record short time.
Melody McCabe, child's mother could not believe when she heard Dr. Jeffrey Brown say that Daniel has a liver. The hospital had placed child's name on donor's list just 40minutes ago that the parents of the child were not yet informed about that.
It took only 40 minutes for the lucky child to find a donor with a liver for him. The six-months-old is suffering from a rare liver disease called "biliary atresia" which meant that bile ducts in child's liver did not have normal openings.
Dr. Brown was unable to find words to express his joy and surprise about the news. The least time recorded in the history of the hospital is 12 hours to find a donor with a suitable body organ after a patient is listed on the donor list.
Little suffering kid had his skin yellow and was badly malnourished. His ribs sustained cracks and his parents would not even know.
Daniel's parents came from Milwaukee to Chicago on December 7and expected to wait for several months as the average time to find a donor is 86 days after listing on the donor list. But she received the most shocking happy news of having found a liver by a donor for her child, as reports Inside Edition.
The doctors preferred not to discuss the gravity of child's condition with the parents but when the surgery did not work with the child, MsCabes realized that their son needed a liver. Daniel was listed on the donors' list and after 40 minutes only a donor was found with a matching liver for him.
Justin Boese, Lurie Children's Organ Procurement Specialist, says that this is the most incredible incident in organ donating process he has seen since past five years when he first joined the hospital. Usually, the least wait time recorded here was 12 hours. 40 minutes is quite incredible.
All over US it is only 43 patients who waited for 40 minutes or lesser in the past five years. McCabes' child is a very lucky patient to find a donor in that short time. But McCabes felt deeply sorry for the family of the donor who just passed away from the world. She would love to meet the family of the donor, who was a 30-year-old male, to thank them, according to Yahoo!
8-pound-child was one of the smallest patients in the hospital who underwent a six-hour-surgery the next day after receiving the donated liver. He will stay in the hospital for 3 moths more to recover fully and regain this liver's full function.
Little patient's family is happy to observe skin color returning to normal pink after a few hours of surgery and they are hopeful that he is released form ICU in a week's time.
MacCabes leaves a message for the world to think of other suffering people when you come to leave this world; every healthy person can help 60 other suffering patients if he wants to.
