Diabetes is a disease that could lead to kidney and heart diseases, however, health professionals believe that they are a step closer to having the right treatment for such complications. Experts suggest that an "anti-ageing" hormone could help patients to avoid developing kidney and heart conditions and those who don't have this hormone in their blood are at more risk of having early symptoms associated with diabetic kidney disease.

The hormone called "Klotho" is responsible for protecting arteries from several changes that are linked to aging like the blood vessel walls becoming condensed. This event usually causes heart disease, as reported by Express.

The experts conducted a study to 78 type 1 diabetes patients plus 33 respondents who already have symptoms of diabetic kidney disease. The researchers examined their blood and urine samples and found out that these patients have lower numbers of Klotho circulating their blood vessels. Meanwhile, those who are not experiencing the disease had the higher levels which are the same as with the healthy individuals.

"For the first time, Klotho has been linked to kidney disease in Type 1 diabetes patients and this finding represents an exciting step towards developing new markers for disease and potentially new treatments," lead researcher Dr. Giuseppe Maltese said.

According to Science Daily, the experts are now planning to conduct further research using larger groups of type 1 and 2 diabetic patients. This is to identify patients who are at their early stage of the disease who have the higher chance of developing kidney and cardiovascular conditions.

"This study highlights the important clinical and basic science research that is being undertaken on Klotho at King's," study's co-author Dr. Richard Siow said. He has recently published a study showing the anti-ageing hormone's protective effect with cardiovascular cells. The team from King's College London has also emphasized how their study will help other experts to further understand why Klotho helps in anti-ageing and how lacking it can lead to age-related conditions.
