Jon Jones, the UFC light heavyweight champion, has been involved in a hit and run accident, which injured a 20-year-old pregnant woman.
Sporting News spoke with Tanner Tixier, spokesman for the Albuquerque Police department. Tixier stated that the UFC fighter was booked on Monday due to the accident.
According to Sporting News, the accident occurred at around 11:20 am Sunday, when Jones ran a red light. Jones' rented Buick SUV then crashed into Vanessa Sonnenberg's vehicle.
MMA Fighting states that a third car was involved. No other information has been released about the third vehicle.
After the accident, Jones reportedly fled the scene of the accident on foot, only to return to pocket a handful of money and flee again. A police officer off-duty, who happened to witness the accident, recognized Jones as a UFC fighter.
Sonnenberg's arm was injured in the accident, states MMA Fighting. As a result, Jones' charge was upgraded from a misdemeanor to a felony. According to Sporting news, a felony is "punishable by up to three years of prison."
Referring to the accident, the pregnant woman told Koat, "I kind of freaked out and I was just more upset, you know, that he couldn't at least stayed and at least said, 'I'm sorry' or something,"
The Metro Detention Center has a record stating that Jones' bail was set at $2,500. The UFC champ posted bail on Monday night at 7:11 pm, after turning himself in to the police, reports Sporting News.
The report adds, "Jones' attorney [Vincent Ward] arranged for the fighter to surrender after a warrant for his arrest was issued Monday afternoon."
Jones is scheduled to defend his title against Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 on May 23, Sporting News notes.
UFC has released a statement regarding Jon Jones' hit and run accident, reports Koat.
"We are aware that the Albuquerque Police Department is interested in speaking to Jon Jones regarding his possible involvement in a motor vehicle accident. We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available," the statement reads.
Vincent Ward, Jones attorney, also made a statement saying, "[Jones] wants to get down to training for this fight he has. He wouldn't want to be dealing with this right now, but he's a great guy, he's taking all this seriously."
