Sam Smith canceled all upcoming shows in his Australian tour due to vocal cord hemorrhage. According to Billboard, the damage to his vocal cords was diagnosed while Smith was on tour in Australia. The British singer was told to stop performing until he fully recovers.

Addressing his fans, Smith apologized about the canceled tour by saying, "I'm deeply, deeply saddened to all my Australian fans, I have to cancel my Australian tour."

"I have been vocally exhausted for a while now however last night in Sydney I had a small hemorrhage on my vocal cords," Smith explains to his fans.

He continues on to say, "The doctors have told me I need to fully rest until my vocal chords have healed, otherwise this could become a huge long-term issue. I am so sorry to all who have bought tickets, I truly am. This kills me."

To prevent vocal cord hemorrhaging, below are some facts, symptoms, and cures that might help.

#1: Definition of Vocal Cord Hemorrhage

The Osborne Head & Neck Institute website  defines a vocal cord hemorrhage. It states, "A vocal hemorrhage occurs when a small blood vessel located within the vocal fold bursts. This results in blood leaking into the vocal fold and occurs with forceful, aggressive, or incorrect voice use."

#2: Causes

According to Throat Disorder, a vocal cord hemorrhage can be brought about after a "traumatic voice event" like screaming, singing loudly, or coughing.

#3: Sudden Voice Change

One symptom of a vocal cord hemorrhage is that the singer's voice suddenly changes, reports Vocal Health.

#4: Hoarseness

This is another symptom that may lead to a vocal cord hemorrhage, reports Throat Disorder. MedicineNet states that this usually results in a change of pitch and volume in the singer's voice.

#5: Vocal Fatigue

Vocal Fatigue is a symptom of vocal cord hemorrhage, reports Throat Disorder. It can occur in many professions that require a lot of speaking, states the Osborne Head & Neck Institute website. It is caused by the misuse of the laryngeal and extrinsic muscles.

#6: Rough Voice

This is the third symptom that may lead to a vocal cord hemorrhage, reports Throat Disorder.

#7: Rest and Arnica

According to Vocal Health, doctors advise people who are at risk of or have had a vocal cord hemorrhage to rest. Doctors may also prescribe Arnica, so that any excess blood can be absorbed more quickly.

#8: Steroids

Doctors may also prescribe steroids, reports Vocal Health, so that any inflammation in the vocal fold can be reduced.
