Sandra Lee Double Mastectomy Scheduled; NY Governor's Girlfriend has Breast Cancer

Sandra Lee, the long-time girlfriend of New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, revealed that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and will undergo a double mastectomy to treat it.
According to New York Times, Lee, who also stars in her own cooking show, shared the devastating news in a pre-recorded interview with Robin Roberts on ABC's "Good Morning America." In the interview, Lee explains that she received the news after a photoshoot for People's Most Beautiful issue in March.
Referring to her reaction to the news, Lee states, "I was just still. I didn't even cry, I was stunned. And that's how fast life turns, it turns on a dime."
Los Angeles Times says that Lee revealed her diagnosis to the public because she wanted "to remind women of the potentially lifesaving power of early detection." Lee is only 48 but has always visited the doctor for regular mammograms, which ultimately saved her life in the long run.
The cooking star is diagnosed with DCIS or ductal carcinoma in situ. People explains that it is a common non-invasive form of cancer found in the milk ducts. Mayo Clinic states that this form of breast cancer is generaly not life-threatening.
However, DCIS can become invasive if left without treatment. BreastCancer.org explains that DCIS can spread from the milk ducts to breast tissues, if not treated.
Talking with her physicians for the best possible course of action to treat her case, a lumpectomy did not seem to be the best option, reports LA Times. Lee's radiologist recommended getting a mastectomy.
Lee then asked her physicians, "If I'm going to have a mastectomy, am I supposed to just get one done?" To which both her radiologist and doctor replied, "You're a ticking time bomb. I would just get them both done."
As a result, Lee is scheduled for a double mastectomy later this week. Her 10-year boyfriend, Cuomo, will be by her side during the surgery and her recovery period.
He already made a statement informing the public of his absence to be near Lee's side as she recovers. "I expect to take some personal time because I want to be with Sandy to support her in any way I can as she handles the trauma of her operation and the pain of the recovery," said the governor.
