Gwyneth Paltrow Advocates Mandatory GMO Labeling

Multihyphenate Gwyneth Paltrow is breaking ground yet again after heading to the United States Congress to deliver a speech on genetically modified organism (GMO) labeling on products, People reports.
The 42-year old actress and lifestyle guru behind GOOP.com expressed her support for the coalition "Just Label It", whose Hollywood celebrity supporters already include Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jillian Michaels and Sara Gilbert, among others.
"I’m not here as an expert," Paltrow said during her speech at Capitol Hill. "I’m here as a mother, an American mother, who honestly believes that I have the right to know what’s in the food I feed my family. I’m not an intensely political person."
Paltrow also expressed her opposition to the "Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act", which opposers have called the "Deny Americans the Right to Know" or DARK Act. This bill was passed two weeks ago and prohibits states from requiring labels to identify if a product was made with GMOs.
Last week, Paltrow posted on her official Facebook page a message about her visit to Capitol Hill, adding why she was opposed to the bill. She wrote: "The evidence suggests that GMO’s are an environmental disaster, both in the long term and in the short. But I am not asking you to weigh in on whether they are good or bad. We just want a label! We have a right to know what is in our food like the 64 other countries who label or don’t allow GMO’s at all."
This is not the first time Paltrow, also a two-time cookbook author, has delved into issues about food. In fact, earlier this year, the Huffington Post reported that Paltrow and her personal trainer Tracy Anderson joined forces to create 3 Green Hearts, a line of prepared foods that feature fresh juices, salads, and meals that are healthy.
Anderson said in an interview with Hamptons Magazine: "Along the journey, we've always understood how important [food is] to our bodies; it's a complete marriage with the fitness," she said. "As people become more aware of organic foods, the importance of eating things that are whole and nutritious [becomes clear]."
Paltrow, who is also a mother of two and has been praised for her fit body after having two children, told ET in an interview: "My food philosophy is: Nothing should be ruled out. I don’t believe in saying, 'You’re not allowed that.' If my kids want a Shirley Temple with the radioactive cherry in it, go for it, you know?"
She also told ET that her website, GOOP.com, "become synonymous with detox because we’re interested in ways to be healthy. It's not hippie-ish. It’s dealing with the reality that we live in a really toxic world."
