Who is Bear Grylls and why will the president of the United States appear in his "Running Wild" television show?
According to USA Today, Grylls is a former British Special Forces soldier who also happens to be a survival expert. He has been the youngest man to be appointed as Chief Scout in the UK and has even been awarded as an honorary commission when he was a commander in the Royal Navy and a colonel for the Royal Marines Commandos. He is also noted to be one of the youngest climbers to reach the summit of Mt. Everest.
Furthermore, Grylls has been the host of "Man vs. Wild," a show in Discovery Channel that has ran for seven seasons. It has showcased Grylls ability to survive in strange and deadly locations. He has also written several books which includes Mud, Sweat and Tears.
NBC's "Running Wild with Bear Grylls" features celebrities on a one-on-one adventure with the ex-soldier, trying to test their survival skills in extreme locations, CNN reports. Celebrities like Channing Tatum and Kate Winslet have already participated in this reality show and apparently, have agreed to do crazy things for the sake of surviving. Most have had the time of their lives while some has taken the opportunity to open up about issues, making it a different kind of show.
However, this will be the first time that Grylls will feature a sitting president on his show, which has been timely since President Barack Obama will be in Alaska to promote climate change actions. The White House and NBC have both announced the president's participation in the show last Monday.

TIME Magazine writes that the president will stay in the state for three days to highlight the possible effects of global warming in their region. No details about what the president will exactly do during the show but if it will be similar to other episodes, he will probably be hiking in the Exit Glacier or fishing salmon, which will definitely test his survival skills.
Past episodes have featured extreme locations like Scotland, Yosemite and the Appalachia. The Alaskan trip is apparently also a first for the show. President Obama has jokingly phrased 'the bear is loose!' probably to promote his appearance on the show.
The president's episode for Running Wild with Bear Grylls is slated to air late this year on NBC.
