Serena Williams defeats sister Venus Williams at US Open; closes in on all four Grand Slam titles
- comments
Serena Williams, the number one female player tennis in the whole world, is an inch closer to winning a Grand Slam title last Tuesday, September 8, as she defeats her sister, Venus Williams, during the quarterfinals of the 2015 US Open held at Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York City.
In a three-set win, Serena beats Venus with her astounding 6-2, 1-6, and 6-3 scores, making her a huge contender for the Grand Slam title, US Magazine writes. After the match, Venus gave her sister a hug and said that she is happy for her.
It is apparent that Venus felt very proud of her victorious sister, even if it meant a loss for her. Serena shares that although she and her sister look as if they are tough competitors on court, at the end of the match, they are still sisters, and that fact comes first.

Celebrities came to watch the match and others even took their reactions and congratulations on Twitter after Serena was named the winner. Of course, there had been several off the court incidents that took the media's attention, like how fans flocked around Kim Kardashian or how Donald Trump got booed in the stadium.

USA Today adds that Serena has referred to their sibling competition as the "greatest story in tennis" and it is indeed, as you see two sisters making their way to the top of the ranks.
If Serena wins two more matches, she will be the first pro tennis player to get all four Grand Slam titles since Steffi Graf in 1988. Furthermore, if she gets her fourth consecutive US Open title and her seventh title overall, she will be equaling the 22 championships won by Graf, making her a legend and second best to Margaret Court's 24 major championships.
Patrick Mouratoglou, Serena's coach and mentor, commends both girls for playing their best. He believes if either one felt uncomfortable playing against each other, they would have not reached their levels right now. Venus believes that as her sister continues with her Grand Slam bid, it will be a moment for their family and will only prove further that her sister is the best ever.
ESPN writes that Serena needs to defeat the unseeded Roberta Vinci, who was given the worst odds to defeat Serena because she has yet to earn a win from her 0-4 record against the top player, tough contender Simona Halep, who has miraculously won 1-6 over Serena, and Flavia Pennetta, who has no recorded win over Serena as well.
