Disney plans to ‘modernize’ Mary Poppins in new live-action movie

Mary Poppins will be flying her umbrella back into Disney's studios. According to Variety, Disney has reached far into its vault and unearthed the two-time Academy Award-winning classic, Mary Poppins.
There have been reports stating that the new live-action Mary Poppins film will be a sequel or reboot of the classic. However, Entertainment Weekly believes that Disney will "modernize" the old tales of P.L. Travers.
News of modernizing the lovable nanny and her adventures with the Banks family might shock fans of the classic movie. There is no need to worry however, since the upcoming Mary Poppins film will still take place in the 1900's.
Screen Crush explains that the new Mary Poppins film will be set 20 years after the events of the 1964 film. This would place the movie in Depression-era London.
In addition, the upcoming movie will be based off of Travers' other novels in the series. The original film was based off of the first novel in the series, explains EW.
So, what is exactly being modernized about the new Mary Poppins film? According to the video below, the new film might have a darker tone, as is the fad of live-action movies these days.
In addition, the movie will probably also lean more towards how P.L. Travers originally envisioned Mary Poppins' story playing out on the big screen.
As seen in the movie, "Saving Mr. Banks," Travers had many complaints about the direction of the film and really wanted to capture the story behind her stories of Mary Poppins.
Unfortunately, Disney did not fully follow Travers' plans for the film. It would seem that Disney will try to do right by Travers this time around with the new Mary Poppins film. In fact, Disney will be collaborating with the Traverse estate, during the production of the film.
According to Bustle, Rob Marshall, who directed "Into the Woods" and "Chicago," will helm the Mary Poppins movie. Meanwhile, that Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who worked together on the Broadway version of "Hairspray," will compose the music for the film, states Screen Crush.
Richard Sherman, who wrote the unforgettable songs for the original movie with his brother Robert, has already given his blessing to Shaiman and Wittman.
As for who will be the next Mary Poppins, there is talk that Anne Hathaway has shown interest in the film, but nothing has been confirmed yet. Although, Hathaway worked with Julie Andrews in "The Princess Diaries," making it more likely for her to receive Andrews blessing to play the iconic role.
