'Trolls' cast news & spoilers: Justin Timberlake to star in the DreamWorks animated musical

If you grew up in the '90s, you'll know exactly what trolls are - spiky-haired, big eyes, and a novelty toy made from Denmark, which may or may not scare you to death if you happen to see one staring right at you in the middle of the night. However, it looks like DreamWorks Animations will change the way kids see these lovely creatures because apparently, a new film will feature them in a comical and musical light, headed by ultimate '90s boy band heartthrob Justin Timberlake.
Reuters said the animations studio announced last Tuesday that they have chosen Timberlake to be the voice of their lead male character Branch, a "hilariously hardcore survivalist" troll who is shy and always hesitant to show his true colors. This will be the first movie adaptation about the Danish toys that made quite an impact during its revival in 1990.

The Grammy and Emmy Award-winner is no stranger in acting in animations as he has made several cameo roles in the hit "Toy Story" movies. The film will be directed by "Shrek Forever After" director Mike Mitchell and produced by Gina Shay. It is set to debut on November 4, 2016, under 20th Century Fox.
Timberlake will be joining "Pitch Perfect" and "Into the Woods" actress Anna Kendrick, who will play the role of Princess Poppy, Variety adds. Mitchell shares in an old Variety interview that Kendrick will be perfect for the role as she has an amazing singing voice. The actress will be able to put to life Poppy in a sassy and spirited character that will definitely put a whole new meaning to the iconic dolls.

The Troll dolls have been making the rounds since 1959, when Thomas Dam, a Danish fisherman and woodcutter decided to carve a doll for his daughter Lajla as a Christmas present because he was low on funds, Coming Soon shares. The doll was inspired by the Scandinavian folklore about trolls, which could also be the possible plot for this movie adaptation, as it included a princess and a few trolls.
Dam might not have imagined how much his creation will rock the modern world, especially as it became one of the biggest craze in the 1960s. In fact, the Troll dolls were such a phenomena, it made a revival in the '90s, but adding a twist of shocking color to their hair. Their blank stares could have been weird but these toys have captured the hearts of fans around the world, making them one of the most iconic toys ever made.
