How has Meredith Grey fared since the death of her husband McDreamy in the last season? Watch the trailer of "Grey's Anatomy" season 12 here.

In the trailer, a voice explains that the viewers of the show will find out at the season 12 premiere that "everything has changed."

Patrick Dempsey's character Dr. Derek Shepherd was involved in a motor vehicle accident last season. He was sent to a hospital with serious head and chest injuries that needed the expertise of a neurosurgeon like him but it was too late. Shepherd becomes brain dead leaving his wife, Meredith, to decide whether to take off the life support. Meredith pulls the plug when she realized that her husband is gone, according to a recap by Hollywood Life.

In the trailer we see Grey waking up alone but we find out that once she goes downstairs to confront what Jo Wilson (played by Camilla Luddington) was up to with a sledgehammer, there were a lot of toys, things that could belong to her own child that she gave birth to last season.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pompeo gave insights on why the season 12 trailer looked and sounded upbeat and cheery.

"Everyone can agree last year was pretty dark tonally. We were telling volatile stories, and this year we're going to turn over the soil, and the show has a lighter look. It's brighter. We're trying to go back a little bit more to the original Grey's and have a little bit of a lighter tone this year," she explained.

As for Grey's life without McDreamy, Pompeo added that Meredith is strong and believes that she can go on life as a widow with her head held high. When asked what Grey would be up to, Pompeo answered that she is still working at the Grey Sloan Memorial hospital and taking care of her kids.

As for another man in Grey's life after having the perfect marriage with her deceased husband, Pompeo indirectly tackled the question by explaining Meredith's present perspective.

"We're going to start seeing Meredith begin exploring the question of "Once you've had a perfect love and a perfect marriage, with the perfect guy, what do you do next?" A part of her is definitely going to wonder if the best parts of her love life are already behind her.

"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 will premiere Thursday, Sept. 24, 8 pm TC on ABC.
