It has been a year since Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling have announced that they are expecting a child. The news broke every woman's heart, especially for those who are dreaming that one day, the heartthrob Gosling will look their way.
Now, speaking for the first time on "The Wendy Williams Show" last Wednesday, the Latina actress opens up about the pressure of being a Hollywood mother, her new life as a mom, and the story behind their daughter's name.
People Magazine reports that Mendes didn't feel any pressure to lose all the baby weight because she didn't allow "the Hollywood standard" to change her view on motherhood. The 41-year-old actress exclusively told Wendy Williams that she didn't like the term "bounce back" and she feels that it meant women are just being hard on each other. She adds that if a woman fits her bikini after two weeks, then that's okay but women should learn how to support each other more, not body shame one another.
Fortunately, Mendes has the support of her Cuban family and 34-year-old partner, something that the actress truly appreciates. Gosling's family is also very hands-on, that's why the star didn't feel the need to hire a nanny especially with all the help that she's getting from both families. Mendes explains that whenever her family is around, it's like seeing a Cuban takeover. "It's amazing because they take the baby, they start cooking, the dishes are done… it's a beautiful take over," she said.
When asked what they named their daughter, Mendes reveals that it is Esmeralda Amada, inspired by the heroine from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", The Daily Mail UK adds. Mendes explains that she and Gosling have always loved the cartoon and the novel, that's why the name kept coming back to them. Furthermore, the name "Esmeralda" is very popular among Latinos and the actress states it'll be easier for her father to pronounce.
The beautiful and kind-hearted Esmeralda is the gypsy woman who starred in the classic 1831 Gothic novel written by Victor Hugo. The novel had a gruesome ending but in 1996, Disney created a lighter, family-friendly version for a general audience. Demi Moore lended her voice to the gypsy that Quasimodo loved.
E! Online writes that besides her mother duties, Mendes is also busy designing for her "New York & Company" clothes line. Her new September collection sets an example to little girls that dressing should make you feel beautiful. The actress reveals she makes clothes that she believes will look good on moms and all women. Mendes dishes it's delightful to see that there are now more diversity on the runway and its important to have everyone represented.
