Model and television host Chrissy Teigen's pregnancy has been well publicized thanks to her media influence and social media posts. From her struggles with fertility to finally conceiving, the 30-year-old is keeping fans and followers up to date with her pregnancy.
And the model isn't using her pregnancy as an excuse not to exercise. In fact, People reports that the mom-to-be still works out as much as five times a day.
Teigen works out with celebrity trainer and Under Armour ambassador Simone De La Rue, who shared that the model turned TV host is "very dedicated" when it comes to keeping in shape. De La Rue admits that in order to accommodate the pregnancy, both of them have had to change up the workout routine, but it all comes down to how Teigen feels at the moment. There is no pressure to workout if she does not feel like it.
But what does Teigen's workout involve? Exercises for stronger arms, for when the baby arrives, such as bicep curls and tricep curls using three- and five-pound weights and overhead presses to strengthen the shoulders as well. Teigen also does leg exercises such as pony kicks to firm up the glues and maintain a tight butt. De La Rue stresses the importance of stabilizing and maintaining balance throughout the growth of the belly. Finally, she says that mothers should be in tune with their pregnant body.
"Always stay in tune with your own body and see how you’re feeling day to day," said De La Rue. "Every day is different—some days you have a lot of strength and other days you’re extremely tired, so be gentle to yourself and be kind, but know that it’s okay to work out, and it’s okay to work up a sweat."
Here are some great reasons to get active even during pregnancy. Note that not all bodies are the same, and it's best to consult the doctor for the safest exercises during pregnancy.
1. Shorter labor - According to Laura Riley, MD, spokesperson for the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and author of "Pregnancy: You and Your Baby," being physically active while one is pregnant leads to better pregnancy outcomes and shorter periods of labor, which is always something mothers can benefit from, as per WebMD.
2. Less pregnancy discomfort - Baby Center reports that regular exercise stretches not only strengthens your muscles, but also helps the body cope better with various back, limb, and foot pains linked to pregnancy. It also helps improve circulation.
3. Lowered risk for gestational diabetes - Fit Pregnancy reports that regular exercise can reduce the risk for developing gestational diabetes by as much as 27%. Women with high blood pressure are at risk for developing type II diabetes 10 years after childbirth, but maintaining regular exercise helps keep away various types of illnesses and diseases.
