Coca-Cola is working closely with researchers and fitness experts to rebrand the soda as healthy, Tech Times reports.

Last month, several writers wrote health articles on food and snacking in honor of the American Health Month. The reports by these highly respected personalities appeared on the internet and other media publications, suggesting that soda can be a part of healthy eating habits, notes Tech Times.

Ben Sheidler, one of the spokesmen for the Coca-Cola company, said in an interview with Newsmax that they are working with a network of dietitians for Coke's new image. He also compared the February articles to product placements one might see on TV shows.

The well-known nutritionists working with Coca-Cola suggested to include almonds, portioned desserts, and mini-cans of soda as healthy snacks. Drinking the smaller cans will allegedly limit caloric intake. Although there is lesser sugar, the cost of these mini-cans is higher than 12-ounce cans and therefore, yielding more profit for the company, according to the article from Tech Times.

The soda-drinking trend is steadily declining. According to NJ.com, giant soda companies such as Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc., and Dr. Pepper Snapple Group Inc. had trouble selling their fizzy drinks in the second quarter in North America. The decline in sales has been observed over the years, and Beverage Digest notes soda consumption has been getting slower since 1998. NJ.com also says the wide variety of drink choices in the market -- including bottled waters, teas, energy drinks, and many others -- also affect soda sales.

Despite soda being one of the leading causes of obesity, notes a Harvard study, Coca-Cola employed health professional partners, Sylvia Meléndez Klinger, MS, RDN, LDN, CPT, Robyn Flipse, MS, RD, and Rani G. Whitfield, MD to talk about healthy lifestyles, according to their website.

"Since food plays such a dominant role in the story of our lives, I have valued the opportunity to work with companies like Coca-Cola that provide a diverse selection of food and beverage choices to satisfy our many needs.  It is important that we work together - both the corporate and professional community - to help provide information to consumers on how they can improve their overall wellness," Robyn Flipse answered when asked why she chose to partner with Coca-Cola in sharing about nutrition and wellness in the website Q&A.
